Naughton Named Univera Healthcare Medicare CMO

Bruce J. Naughton, M.D., has been named vice president and chief medical officer for Univera Healthcare’s Medicare division.

In his new role, Naughton will focus on utilization review, strategic planning and other quality initiatives related to Medicare.

“One of my key goals will be to determine how to provide incentives for physicians to deliver care that is more value based as opposed to volume based,” Naughton said. “I would like to be able to increase opportunities, primarily for the elderly, to remain in their own homes rather than to be hospitalized for acute illnesses.”

Naughton noted that his experience in securing program grants for programs designed to manage the health of older adults will be beneficial as he serves the Western New York physician community in his new role. In particular, he hopes to develop a program designed to help primary care physicians with poly-pharmacy issues.

Naughton most recently served as medical director, palliative care, for the Catholic Health System, chief of geriatrics and palliative care at Mercy Hospital and medical director of the LIFE program, a PACE program based in Buffalo. His research has focused on geriatrics rehabilitation, home care, hospitals, and nursing homes and has resulted in more than 60 publications.

A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, Naughton resides in Buffalo with his wife and three sons.
